Knowledge about Titanium Mesh


Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol. It is a lustrous transition metal with a silver color, low density, and high strength. Titanium is resistant to corrosion in sea water, aqua regia, and chlorine. Most important properties for titanium are high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance.

Titanium mesh, can be used as corrosion resistance anode, filtering for corrosive substance. Sacrificial anode is the unique usage for titanium mesh. Tantalum, of course has a better corrosion resistance in acidic environment, especially in sulfuric acid, but the price is more than 10 times of titanium. That makes titanium the most commonly used as anti-corrosion anode.

There are three types of titanium mesh by manufacturing method: weaved mesh, stamped mesh, expanded mesh.

Titanium weaved mesh is weaved by metal wire, the openings are regularly square. The diameter and opening size are mutual restriction. Wire mesh with small opening are mostly used for filtering.

Stamped mesh is stamped from titanium sheets, the openings are regularly round, it also can be other required-shape. Stamping dies are engaged in this product. The thickness and opening size are mutual restriction.

Titanium expanded mesh is expanded from titanium sheets, the openings are normally diamond. It is used as anode in many fields. Titanium mesh is usually coated with metal oxide and metal mixture oxide coated (MMO coated) such as RuO2/IrO2 coated anode, platinised anode. These mesh anodes are used for cathode protection. Different coatings are used for different circumstance. The coating process is plating and brushing, depends on coating materials and manufacture method from different shops.

Other weaving & expanding methods are also available, just need new mold and experiments.

Most common material is grade 2 C.P. titanium for titanium mesh. Information needed for a quote for titanium mesh: opening size, mesh stem, width x length, wire diameter/thickness, quantity.
